The Palestinians and the Muslims around the world believe that a great injustice has occurred and the Palestinians are the victims. But any sympathizer with the Palestinians is ostracized and marked as an advocate for terrorism and an anti-Semite. Muslims are so preoccupied with establishing their stance against terrorism, that the Palestinians’ suffering becomes an afterthought. It should be stated that most of the Palestinians are Muslims, but some are Christians as well. Muslims feel the pain of their brothers and sisters throughout the world. Of course, there are Muslims persecuting others and Muslims being persecuted throughout the world, but no persecution has received more world support than the one going on in the Palestine. As Jews galvanized themselves after the atrocities of the Holocaust, so too must the Muslims galvanize ourselves and gain the world’s support against occupation and murder. It should go without saying that the act of suicide is an act of desperation. No one wants to win a battle in which they cannot see the victory. People look at every terrorist attack on Israel in terms of “how did this happen?, instead of “why did this happen?” The question “why” in no way justifies suicide bombings, which are totally un-Islamic and un-Quranic, but it does help examine the reason for its prevalence.
One reason that the Palestinian struggle is not properly assessed is because most people cannot get beyond this word “terrorism.” But the problem lies with the definition of the word “terrorism.” If it is left up to the participants of a conflict, they would all call themselves “freedom fighters” and their opponents “terrorists.” Though the word “terrorism” is repeated countless times a day, it is very rarely defined. This is because of the implications of its definition.
Terrorism is the unlawful use or threatened use of force or violence by a person or an organized group against people or property with the intention of intimidating or coercing societies or governments, often for ideological or political reasons.
Therefore, the culprits of 9/11 and all suicide bombers are terrorists. This definition would also mean that our western powers implored terrorism to gain and expand their territory throughout the world and throughout history. Britain used terrorism to colonize countless countries, including those of North America. Not only was America established on terrorism, but the 13 colonies expanded westward through the use of terrorism. America was built upon the backs of slaves through forced free labor which was terrorism. Lynching, sending attackdogs, spraying water hoses to impose segregation was terrorism. Imposing an ideology on a people who do not want it is terrorism, even if it is democracy. Torture is a form of terrorism. So too are embargoes and sanctions which restrict food and medicine to a country you are at odds with. These are all acts of violence or threats of violence, not on the military, but on noncombatants or civilians for whatever reason.
